Its distinctively soft, handy plastic bottle featuring a baby (Kewpie’s logo) and topped with a red cap has become an iconic symbol, synonymous for many with the term “Japanese mayonnaise.”
Japanese mayonnaise is primarily distinguished by its exceptionally creamy, thick texture, delicate sweetness, rich umami, and unique eggy flavor. Unlike Western mayonnaise, which is made from whole eggs, Kewpie Mayo uses only egg yolks, giving it a bold, rich taste. Additionally, instead of regular distilled vinegar and sugar, Kewpie Mayo contains apple vinegar, which adds a slightly sweet note.
The Japanese love adding mayonnaise to many dishes, though it’s most commonly used with fried foods such as okonomiyaki, takoyaki, or yakisoba.
